Radiating Diamonds Block

I drew this block out while standing at my ironing board last Tuesday. I am fairly certain that I am not the first person to make this block – especially when there are books like the Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilts. It has 4,000 quilt blocks in it, so I have to believe that even though I drew it out, I’m not the first person to do it!

This block is another example of using Half Square Triangles and basic squares.  For more information on constructing Half Square Triangles – please refer to my Chevron Block Tutorial.

Get the know how after the jump! You will want to start with three coordinating prints – I used two dark values in contrasting colors and a light.

Cutting:

You will need:
Four 3.5 inch squares of the Green
Two 4 inch squares of the Green
Six 4 inch squares of the Red
Four 4 inch Squares of the White

*Remember to always use a 1/4 inch seam*

Using the four inch squares construct your Half Square Triangles.

Pair the 2 green squares with 2 of the red- this will give you a total of 4 green and red half square triangles.

Pair the remaining 4 squares of red with the 4 squares of white to create 8 white and red half square triangles.

Layout your rows following my diagram

Sew your rows together and you have your quilt block!

Any questions? Are you going to make one of your own? Do you know the true name for this block?  Let me know 🙂

  1. I am liking this block! Going to have to give it a try! 🙂 Your quilt is coming along beautifully!!

  2. This post popped up at the bottom of today's post as a "you might like". I completely freaked out when I saw it! I am totally doing a quilt along on my blog right now based on this block. I actually came up with the idea as a challenge block for the Skill Builder Sampler. I swear I did not copy! My original block was posted 7/8/11.(http://www.flickr.com/photos/59475950@N04/5916718734/in/photostream/)
