A Finish – Kinda Feels Like a Win!

I started a quilt back in July, it is my first ever commission. The bad thing is that I have actually have had it 95% done since July except the binding…which is my least favorite part of the quilting process. I am supposed to give it to its future owner at the end of this week, so needless to say it moved to the top of the finish it fast list.

The quilt pattern is Bloom, by Valori Wells. I was provided with the kit and asked to assemble it.

How about a few more lovely pictures?

All wrapped up and ready to deliver!

As we are traveling my sewing time is slightly more limited. This week I need to make 3 bee blocks and hopefully mail them off by Friday and then it is all holiday sewing. Blankets for my nieces and nephews and….hopefully pajamas for Anne. Wish me luck on the bee blocks!

Did you miss me?

This last week and a half has just been a bear for me.  Anne and I have come down to CA for holiday and our very first day here Anne ended up in the ER. Good grief! She is so my child! I swear, not a vacation went by when I was a child that I didn’t end up in the ER – yes I am a natural born klutz. I am beginning to think Anne is too. Of all my traits that she just had to inherit!

The next day I went to put her new medication on her on Tuesday only to discover that it had peanut oil in it! Her doctor and the pharmacy are so lucky that I read everything before letting it near her because I’m fairly certain that would have landed us back in the ER! Would have had to kill them!!! (Sorry, that is the mama bear in my talking)

The day after that…my 18 year old cat started throwing up blood at 2 am.  That was traumatic and he spent 2 days at the vet’s house. I swear it was like the hits just kept on coming!

On the upside, Anne did NOT have a concussion, but they were concerned and Paws is back home with us, though he is still adjusting to his medication. Hoping and praying that it kicks in quickly.

In sewing news…I set up my mom’s sewing machine on Saturday (talk about a learning curve, sewing on a 20 year old machine!) and I actually finished a quilt!  Depending on the weather, I will post pictures tomorrow.

Now how about some winners… the 2 winners for the charm packs have been announced over on my tutorial for the Mirrored Diamonds blocks – I will be emailing them later today.  The winner of the Selvages is – commenter number one – Lisa McGriff. I will be emailing you later today as well unless you beat me too it!

Hopefully back tomorrow with pretty quilt pictures!

Hexagon Star Burst Tutorial

When I was working on my friend Shanna’s Stripper Row, I knew it had to be triangles but I wanted to include some hexagons. I found the 6 Pointed Star in the Electric Quilt Block Library and decided to switch out the center six 60⁰ triangles for a hexagon.

Here is the finished block, this was assembled using the Hex N More Ruler:

Using your Hex N More Ruler cut the following pieces (Note: I am not demonstrating how to cut the individual pieces, the ruler instructions do an excellent job of that):

For the 4 white sections, cut 8” x 3.5” white pieces and then use the 60⁰ triangle to cut on edge of each piece at a 60⁰ angle.

I fussy cut the center hexagon block.  Take you white hexagon and cut it in half on the flat edges. Do not cut point to point.

Sew first triangle on one of the white sections as pictured.

Sew first triangle to center hexagon. Line up as pictured in the picture below.

Press triangle away from the hexagon as pictured below.

Line up your sections below as pictured.

Pin and sew with a ¼” seam.

Press to the side.

Attach other side in the same manner.

Next assemble the top and bottom sections following the picture sequence below.

Trim the block down to 12.5” x 12.5”

There you have it, how to assemble the gorgeous block above.  I hope you have fun playing with the Hex N More Ruler, which you can purchase from my wonderful sponsor, Quilting Lodge.

Also, if you are wondering where I have been the last week, come back tomorrow and I will explain the saga that was last week. On the upside it has a happy ending but it sure was a ROUGH one.

Secret Santa Swap

I participate in a swap group on Facebook called Sew Swap It. This is the second swap I have participated in with this group and it has been so much fun. The women and men in this group are just wonderful, funny and so supportive of each other. The last swap of the year was for a Secret Santa Swap. We were given a list of items we could make and a name with their preferences. I was really excited when I found out who my partner was and then I was immediately intimidated. I knew immediately that I would not be making anything in Christmas fabrics because I wanted to make something that could be used year round. Here’s what I came up with:

The plate says “eat, drink, and”

I hand quilted the mug rugs that I made and I have it on good authority that the recipient of these goodies is planning on using the larger quilted square as a teapot rug! I am so excited that my gifts were well received. Are you participating in any swaps right now?
