Fears

Source: mdig.com.br via Liz on Pinterest

Fears, I think that we all have them, some are rational and some are totally irrational. When I was younger I had an overactive imagination and I was afraid to look in mirrors when it was dark. I knew it was only me staring back but my overactive imagination thought it was about a thousand other things.

Yesterday I conquered one of my fears, giving myself injections. My RA has not improved on the medications that I started during the past summer, in fact, in many ways it has gotten worse. After much discussion and waiting 6 months to see if the meds would make a difference my doctor and I decided to start Humira. It is an injectible medication that helps many people in my situation. It comes in a pen injector and I have to admit I was petrified of it.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not afraid of needles. I take shots and give blood like a pro (I’ve only fainted from a blood draw one time and in my defense, I was 7 months pregnant!). However, giving myself injections has always petrified me. I had a bad experience with an injectible medication as a teenager and it has haunted me ever since.

Well yesterday, I did it! I gave myself a shot. The nurse and doctor told me I might see results as soon as one month but it could take up to two for pronounced differences to be felt. This is huge news for me as it might mean a true improvement in my (and my family’s) quality of life.

I really hope that in a month or two I will be reporting back about how much better I have been feeling. In the mean time I am celebrating overcoming a fear that was so deep I was practically in tears while preparing to give myself the shot.

Have a happy weekend everyone! Go conquer a fear!

How I Quilt My Dresdens

I have been working diligently the last 3 days on my Sew Intertwined Quilt as part of A Lovely Year of Finishes – it is my goal for March. I have so far finished the center Dresden and I have been working on the middle section of the quilt – I couldn’t do the outside section if I wanted to because…I have no idea how I am going to quilt it yet! I thought I would show you all how I quilted my Dresden, this is by no means the only way, just how I do it.

Here is what my Dresden looks like from the front – you probably can’t tell in this picture but the center I did some pebbling on – the first time I  have done that in a quilt.

I am using the same color for the bobbin that I am for the front. I wanted my quilting to echo the Dresden without actually sewing on the Dresden. I anchored that with my pebbles in the center.

As you can see my echo stitching is fairly even and my points are centered. Here is how I manage that. First I have a 1/4″ walking foot – it is not a must have but it is helpful. If you have a standard quilting foot with a guide, you can also use that to help you achieve the even look that I have here.

You are going to start with a quilting ruler and a removable marker – I used a water soluble pencil by Clover – these remind me of the grease pencils I used to use in the dark room – they are super easy to remove when you are done with your quilting.

Next you will want to extend the lines of the points and the valleys of your Dresden Fans. As you can see in the picture the ruler is lined up to extend the point on the green fan.

You will start your first round of quilting with your foot lined up on the edge of the Dresden, as you reach one of your lines, make sure your needle is in the DOWN position, lift your foot and pivot on the line. Readjust to line up with the edge of the Dresden and quilt to the next drawn line.

As you can see from the pictures above the overall effect is worth all the work. It almost looks like a sunburst from the back. This is also how I achieved the look in the Dresden pillow I made back made in January and blogged about in February.

One last trick about how I quilt. When I am using multiple colored threads I pre-wind all my bobbins and store the thread with bobbin on top underneath my quilting table so that each one is ready and available when I am ready to quilt. It keeps me from having to slow down and search for a bobbin or wind one!

So that’s what I’ve been up to, plugging away on my finish for March. What have you all been up to?

A Lovely Year of Finishes – March Goal Setting Party

Holy Smokes, is it really March already?  Ok, here goes, time to set a goal…I am actually only going to have half the month to work on this because my hubby is finally getting his time off and we are going to go on VACATION for 2 weeks at the end of the month. Exciting but also a bit panic inducing because I have to figure out what I can finish in the allotted number of sewing days – which is only 15 ish (ish because we have doctors appointment and today I am spending my “sewing time” at the Sew Expo in Puyallup, WA!

So here goes, hoping I don’t fall on my face this month, I am putting it out for all to see that I am going to finish my Sew Intertwined Quilt. It needs borders, quilting and binding. Wish me luck – I’m gonna need it!

What do you have planned for your March Finish?

A Stick In The…

PINCUSHION!  I participate in a fun swapping group on Facebook, Sew, Share, Swap, and this is our first swap. We did pincushions. This is what I sent to my swap partner, and friend, CeLynn from CeLynn’s Sunflower Patch, if you don’t already follow her blog, you should!

I followed 2 tutorials that I found on Pinterest. The Cathedral Window Pincushion by Kim at My Go-Go Life. The other pincushion is actually one of my favorites, I like the idea of being able to trap spare pins, but that could just be the mom in me. This is the Pincushion Jar Tutorial by Andy Knowlton for Riley Blake.

Both tutorials were extremely easy to follow. If you are interested in pincushions and looking for tutorials, you are welcome to follow my Pincushion Board over on Pinterest.

Now one of the most fun parts of swaps is getting goodies in the mail and look what came for me!

These amazing goodies were sent to me by my wonderful friend Debbe from Pieces to Love, again if you aren’t following her, you should! She made me two pincushions (we were only required to send 1) and she sent me tons of goodies and a little treat for Anne.

Do you see the tiny pincushion in the thimble! I mean seriously! I am IN LOVE!

Do you participate in swaps? I have really enjoyed them and made so many wonderful friends doing them.
