Stripper Row Progress

Well, my hubby went back to work last Wednesday, hard to believe that they only get 2 days off when they get home from Afghanistan, but there are so many reasons for this, before anyone asks, I will tell you that we do get a month of leave but not until the middle of March. In the meantime it is back to work and our regular daily routine. For Anne and I, that means kindergym, library, chores and nap times. Nap times for mommy basically translates to sewing time. My sewing time is definitely cut in half since having my hubby home because I won’t be sewing at night anymore, but you know what…I’m OK with that!!!

Here are some pictures of what I have been working on.  I am really excited about how this stripper row is turning out.

Don’t you just love my awesome design wall! I really do need to hang some flannel or batting or something so I can ditch the tape and hangers!

The first 2 blocks I were made with the Quick Curve Ruler by Sew Kind of Wonderful. She is doing a QAL right now with her sister and they did a curved flying geese tutorial. I followed the directions but didn’t want geese, so I took the individual 4.5″ squares and changed the lay out.

I’m calling this block “Wedges” because that is what it looks like to me.

I’m calling this block “Circles and Diamonds”. I love how this turned out.

My favorite block so far though is the one I made last night:

This is the Swirly Twirly Dresden and was designed by Vicki from Quilting Lodge. It is a paper pieced pattern and is machine appliqued to a 12.5″ black background.

I have to say, I was super intimidated when I first saw the blocks that Vicki made, but once I conquered my fear of curvy paper piecing I was pleasantly surprised. It took me longer to pick fabrics and decide on their order than it did to piece this together! The hardest part was deciding how to applique it on to my background fabric. I ended up sewing it to a black square that was barely larger than the circle, trimming the excess, then turning it through the open hole. Then I fused the black center circle on to it and zig zag stitched it in place. I pinned the entire piece to the 12.5″ square and stitched around the outside with a 1/8″ seam.

I am tickled with the results and only have 2 blocks left to make!

Don’t forget today is the last day to enter the giveaway from Contemporary Cloth welcoming home my hubby! Good luck to everyone who entered and I will announce the winner tomorrow for Valentine’s Day!

What are you all working on?

Sew Intertwined Pillow

Ok, so I know that I finished my Sew Intertwined quilt top forever ago, like this summer and I still haven’t gotten around to quilting it, but I did finish the pillow to go with the quilt last week!  And if I’m being perfectly honest, and really, why shouldn’t I be, I do actually still plan to add a solid gray border around the outside, so I guess the top isn’t 100% finished.

I’m hoping that my new pillow will inspire me to finish this quilt – do I see my goal for March A Lovely Year of Finishes…just maybe!

I decided to quilt this pillow exactly as I plan to quilt the Dresden in the center of the quilt, with radiating 1/4″ lines in the colors of the quilt: white, green, pink, and orange. I love the overall effect.

Here’s a bit more of a close up on the quilting.

For the back I decided to do a 3 button closure, a first for me. I am really happy with the results (I didn’t follow a tutorial, just did what looked and felt right). The reason the buttons look like they are pulling so much is the pillow form is just a touch too big. I need to order a custom sized one, the ones at JoAnns were all either a touch big or a touch small. I suppose I could make my own…but then that would require even more work and it might never get done! LOL!

This week my goal is to finish the 3 more blocks for my stripper row, I finished 2 last week. I also have 3 bee blocks I need to make. I’m hoping I can get it all done. I’ve been a touch distracted from my sewing with my hubby back home 🙂

Oh yes, and there is a fantastic giveaway that I want to share with you, it’s Monday after all and giveaways are a great way to start the week! My friend Shirley from SimpleSew is celebrating her Blogaversary this week and is having a little party. Make sure you head on over and check it out!!! And don’t forget that my welcome home giveaway from Contemporary Cloth is open until February 13th, still lots of time to enter and join in our homecoming celebration!

Hurry Up and Wait! (And a giveaway!)

Sometimes that is the motto of the army. Hurry Up and Wait!  It can drive an army wife nuts, especially when you are waiting for your loved one to come home.  This weekend, after SIX separate delays, my husband came home to us. I can’t remember the last time I cried so many tears of joy, oh wait, yes I can, it was the last time he came home 2 years ago! I thought I would share some pictures with you, but for those who have never been to a military homecoming ceremony, I will explain how this works.

First you get a phone call saying when your husband will be home, if you are lucky, he comes home on the day and time given, if you are less lucky, you will have multiple changes and delays.  You occupy your time by making welcome home signs, baking, and in our case recovering from being ill.

Anne was up at 6:30 the day her daya came home begging me to make our sign:

When the big day comes you typically go to a gym, most of the wives and children are dressed to the nines (we want to look our best for our loved one) and then we wait. There is a projection screen set up and it is usually focused on an airfield – where your husband’s plane is going to land. You haven’t heard screaming until that plane suddenly appears on that screen.

After the plane lands, the soldiers start to disembark and the screams get a little louder as wives and children start to recognize their loved ones! When Anne saw her Daya, she thought he was right outside the building and took off running to go get him, luckily my mom was faster than her and caught her before she got outside! After they arrive it is another 2-3 hours before you get to see them in person, they have to in-process at the base – luckily they turned a movie on for the kids to watch while they waited for their daddies.

The hardest part of the whole ceremony is when they start to raise the screen and you see those army boots. All you want to do is run and you have to stay put.  I had to pick Anne up and hold her back from running out to her daya.

Then they march towards you and you have to listen to the commander give a speech while you stare at your loved one and wish for him to be in your arms.

Anne was a trooper – she had a little fun while she was waiting.

Then finally finally, when the speech making is over, he is yours! For 48 hours anyways, after that he goes back to work.

So there you have it, there are army boots in my house again! Oh yeah, and I totally missed the first half of the Super Bowl, picking this guy up was way more important 🙂

I would like to say a personal thank you to all of my wonderful friends who have stood by my side this past 9 months. You have made this deployment so much easier and I am so grateful for each and every one of you.

I know I said there would be a giveaway at the top of this post. A Lovely Year of Finishes – February Goal Setting Party

I can’t believe it is already February 1st, how did that happen? The year is already 8.3% over and it just started!  In January alone this amazing group of stitchers had over 120 finishes! Can you believe that?!?  I was just so proud to have finished my first quilt of the year and I can’t wait to move on to my next project for 2013.  This one is not an entire quilt and I won’t even find out what the finished top will look like until almost the end of the year.  I will be working on the next row for my Strip Quilting Group.

My partner in crime, Shanna, made the top row and the queen for this particular quilt is Brookquilt (Shelley) and her theme is “Do Strippers Make More When They Ovulate?” Shelley made the bottom row. Now I already know that Shelley loves Kaffe Fassett fabrics so I will be pulling from my stash. The requirements for this particular quilt are that we use Kona Black (provided) and bright saucy colors. Here are the fabrics I will be pulling from:

I’m not sure why but the colors are a bit off in the picture, sorry about that.  My drop deadline date is February 28th, so wish me luck that I can have this done. I will also be working on several other bee blocks for Bee Awesome (the last month) and Do.Good Stitches Trust Circle. If I’m feeling really scrappy I would like to get borders on my Sew Intertwined quilt and get it basted…but we’ll see about that.

So what do you have planned for February?!?

Add your blog post or flickr photo (with appropriate descriptions) to the linky party below.

**Please note, the linky party is the same here and over at Shanna’s, so there is no need to enter twice **
