Weekend Projects

This weekend I was going to pull fabrics for possible borders for my Vintage Christmas Sampler quilt, there’s only one problem with that…I’m out of fabric!  So the decision to go borderless was made for me!

While I was pulling fabrics, Anne decided to do the same thing. She spotted some Halloween fabric in my cabinet and went on the attack!  Everything was in a huge ziplock bag and she got out an entire WIP progress quilt and I’m sure from the expression on her face you can guess what she wants me to do…

FINISH IT!!!

This is a kit that my mom bought YEARS ago and I started making it last year but never finished it because that’s what we quilters seem to do!   So what do you think…do I give in to the whims of a 2 year old?  It might not be done in time for Halloween, but I do love to put a smile on her face!

Getting My Curve On

Have you all seen the Quick Curve Ruler by Jenny Pedigo of Sew Kind of Wonderful?  This ruler is amazing and the tutorials that Jenny has made to go with it are amazing. The ruler allows you to sew curved blocks and to sew them easily. I bought my Quick Curve Ruler back in March at the Sew Expo in Puyallup, WA, but I have to say the idea of sewing curves continued to intimidate the hell out of me. I finally decided to give it a shot in August and I started with a Jenny’s Urban 9 Patch block. I liked my results so much that I decided to make the same block for my 3×6 Bee Hive.

I actually made one more of the teal and purple blocks – I traded blocks with a couple of extra friends who really loved the block.

I won’t be participating in the 4th quarter of 3×6 this year, hopefully just taking this one quarter off so I can work on Christmas sewing and what not.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas

I finished piecing the quilt top! Now the big question is do I put borders on it?  It is already almost 60″ x 79″ so I don’t need the size – it is HUGE for a cuddle quilt.  What do you all think?

Vintage Christmas Quilt TopAnd in case you were wondering what made me decide to switch my layout in the first place. I was playing around with Ole Frog Eyes and wanted to test out their On Point quilt. Check out my mock up here. I have to say how much I love this tool because it really gives me a chance to see my quilt before I go through the process of laying it all out on my floor.  (This is not a sponsored post, just telling you about a product I love is all.)

Vintage Christmas Quilt – Resurrected

Let’s change gears, Halloween to Christmas!  Last year I spent a great deal of time working on my Vintage Christmas Sampler, but I never finished it. Life happened, finishing up Christmas gifts happened, ok, and a whole bunch of other excuses too.  Well, this year I am starting in October but I have made a couple of changes.

My original plan was to do a 4 x 5 block layout with sashing and a border to make the quilt on the larger side.

I decided that I would like to do an on point layout. This meant I would need to eliminate 2 blocks, so I easily chose the 2 directional blocks and I’m thinking of turning those into a wall hanging. So here is the new layout. Please don’t look too closely at my messy floor.

Last night I started putting the rows together with some red holy print fabric. I am so happy with the results – can’t wait to share the big finish with you!

What are you all working on?

Panel Transformation

My local quilt shop held a panel transformation contest last month. I totally blew the deadline because I had so much going on last month, but that didn’t stop me from making my project. You were supposed to take a panel and make it something more than just a panel.  I didn’t do that exactly. I saw this fabulous panel by Sheri Berry for Northcott, Costume Club. I took the panel and quilted, which you might say…that’s not really transforming it…stick with me people. I swear I did make it original!

(I bet you are wondering if I even quilted it after seeing this pic…)

(Do you see the quilting now? It is all the glowing green! – by the way the panel doesn’t glow, it is cleverly back lit with my TV)

(Light’s Out Costume Club)

This whole wall hanging came about because Anne is obsessed with Halloween and I LOVE nothing more than to put a smile on her face.  She fell in love with the panel and I knew I needed to do something that was going to be really neat in her 2 year old eyes.  In order to get the panel to glow I used Superior Threads NiteLite. I also purposefully chose colors to blend in when the lights were on so that the wow moment would be when you turned off the lights. Needless to say Anne was tickled!

Happy Halloween Everyone!
