Baby Doll Sleep Sack Tutorial

Back in the early 80s, when I was little, I absolutely LOVED the Berenstain Bears. They were my favorite books and I had them all memorized. Needless to say, as soon as I found out I was pregnant I started a collection for my baby.  Anne has a fairly decent sized collection and they are her FAVORITE books, just like mommy.  We went to the fabric shop last week for a little pick me up and this is what she picked out:

Welcome to Bear Country

This is what I made for her:

I got my inspiration from something I had when I was a little girl that my mom had given to me, probably about Anne’s age.

You will need:

  • 14″ zipper
  • 6 rectangles (6.5″ x 8″)
  • 1 panel print (13″5 x 18.5″)
  • Pellon Fusible Fleece ( 26.5″ x 18″)
  • Inside fabric (27″ x 18.5″
  • Quilting Thread
  • Basic Sewing Supplies

Use 1/4″ seams throughout

Outside of the Sleep Sack Layout:

Sew your outside sections together:

Sew outside sections to the center panel:

Following the Pellon Fusible Fleece directions – center the PFF to the back of the piece you just assembled.  You want to make sure that the PFF is 1/4″ smaller on all sides. You may have to trim it a little.

Next, quilt the panel however you would like to. I quilted in the side panels only and left the center print without any quilting. I also used NiteLite Thread by Superior Threads when I quilted. I couldn’t get a picture in the dark, but it glows so beautifully and Anne loves going to sleep with it in her room glowing away!

Next, place the inside fabric right sides together with the quilted panel. Pin 3 sides, leaving bottom open.

Sew the 3 pinned sides with a 1/4″ seam. Clip the corners.

Turn right side out, pin one side of zipper into place and sew down.

Unzip the zipper and pin to the other side, be careful when sewing the zipper down that you don’t sew through the back of the sleep sack. You should now have a tube when the zipper is zipped.

Turn sleep sack inside out, pin across the bottom and sew bottom closed, if you would like to add an “I love you” tag, this is the point to pin it in. You will want to sew this final seam close to the stopper on the zipper.

Turn right side out and you’re done!

Toddler Approved!

This is my project for the Hopeful Threads June Project. I hope you enjoy, if you make one, I would love to see it!

Lookie Lookie!

This weekend I got a squishy package, a really special squishy, from Jenny at Sew Kind of Wonderful

I won a giveaway from Jenny, a custom purse made in the colors of my choosing!  I picked Teal, Purple, White and Gray. You can’t see it in the photo by the lining is a beautiful purple!

(Side note: it is really hard to take a picture of yourself!!!)

I am just so in love with this bag, it is made with Jenny’s Quick Curve Ruler (which I have and can’t wait to do a project with).  If you haven’t checked out her website you really should!

What are you up to today? I will be writing a tutorial for the special project I made for Anne last weekend!

More Mountains

I finished all of my bee blocks for one of the two hives I am in for the 3×6 bee.

Moutains & Valleys

I am really happy with how they turned out. I hope all of my bee mates like them. I still have 8 more blocks to make this month, here’s hoping I can get them all done!

Today I am going hopping with my bee mate Krista. I am really excited to meet her in person and the coolest part is that I get to deliver her block to her in person.  Krista, my friend Dawn, and a friend of Krista’s are all meeting up in Kent, WA for the Western Washington Quilt Shop Hop! I’m not going to be taking my big camera with me because Anne is joining us too and I don’t think that managing camera and toddler will be a good scene. I will have my camera phone though, so hopefully I will have a few pictures for you.

Wish us some shopping hop luck!

Mountains & Valleys

Last month I made this block:

Flying Geese

I really liked it and my Flickr friend Kritta22 helped me decide that this would be a great block for the Sampler Hive that I am in for the 3×6 bee. I decided to make a test block in my own colors because I want to make sure that it ends up in my quilt too.

Mountains & Valleys

Next I worked on BrightAngelBaby’s block – her colors were Purple, Teal, White and Gray. I asked if I could eliminate the gray and she said that would work for her. So here is her block:

Mountains & Valleys

Next I worked on peachykeenquilt’s block. She requested Pink, Aqua, Red and White. I had a little bit of Ruby by Bonnie & Camille left so I decided to use them. Here is her block:

Mountains & Valleys

I hope my bee mates like these. I have 4 more blocks to make for this hive and all six to make for my other hive.  There will be a lot more bee block posts in my future!

What are you working on this week?

Test Block

While I was in California last month I was not really sleeping well. Partly because my hubs is gone, but mostly because Anne wasn’t sleeping well (she misses her daddy). So I had a lot of time on my hands at night to play in Electric Quilt 7.  Here is one of the blocks I came up with.

Originally there was no border on it, but I am using this design for one of the hives I’m in for the 3×6 Bee on Flickr and the blocks need to measure 12×12. I don’t have printer paper large enough to print the templates for a 12×12 block, so instead I made them 10×10 and put a border on them.

What do you all think? These are my colors and will go in the quilt I am making.  I have actually designed a couple of quilts with this block, maybe some day I will find the time to make one of them!
