Bee Blocks

A Moment of Silence

Did you notice that I wasn’t here yesterday? I decided that in honor of 9/11 I would take a moment of silence on my blog. There are so many emotions tied up in the day. I remember exactly how I found out about the Twin Towers. I lived in CA, so it was 5:52 am when the first plane hit. I worked with my mom at the time and she was already at our office. She called me in a panic and told me not to come to work, she didn’t want me to have to drive across the San Francisco Bay that day. I went over to my God Father’s house, he is a retired marine, and spent the day with him. I was too jittery to be alone, and I was petrified with my dad working in San Francisco and my mom having to get on a bridge to come home.  Every year since meeting my husband 9/11 has taken a different meaning for me. The sacrifice hits that much closer to home.  So that’s why I wasn’t here yesterday, I wanted to take the time to really think about what happened all those years ago.

The past 2 days I have been sewing like crazy and I wanted to show you some of my projects:

September blocks for Bee Awesome. Sheetal asked for Creams, Whites, and pops of warm happy colors. She mentioned that she loved mustard yellow, burnt orange and red. I noticed in the blocks she already had that a few had included some aqua and gray, so I threw those colors in thinking they would blend in nicely.

These are the September blocks for the Trust Circle of Do.Good Stitches. We were requested to make the Woven Block from Jenna’s Sew. Happy. Quilt. QAL back at the beginning of this year in warm bright colors. I hope I hit the mark!

I also joined a different type of bee and it starts October 1st. You may recognize some of the blocks below from pictures I posted on Facebook.

Each of us in the Bee are making a starter row and then we will ship our row off to the next person who will use our row as inspiration.  We were able to set basic guidelines and request colors. My guidelines are that each block include at least 1 flying goose (can you tell that I LOVE flying geese?) and that the colors are rainbow colors – ROYGBIV.  This quilt will be for the day bed in our play room so I want it to be bright and happy! I am so excited to ship it off and see what the next person comes up with and adds to it!

I hope everyone is having a great hump day!

Bee Blocks

This month one of my bees is on a break, I haven’t received fabric for my other one yet, and 2 of them have come to an end but that hasn’t stopped me from making bee blocks!  I made 2 blocks for my friend H2OGirl who blogs at Fiber of All Sorts. She was kind enough to make some blocks for me when it was my month in Sew Bee Blissful and she isn’t even in the bee! So when she asked me to do the same, I happily said yes!  She gave us lovely yummy colors of yellows, browns, blues, and grays with a white background. The guidance she gave us was that each block have a triangle or HST in it.  I have to say it was almost TOO much freedom, lucky for me, I actually spent the month of May not sleeping and designing quilts out of nothing but HSTs and QSTs. Here’s what I came up with.

For this block I busted out my 60 degree Tri Recs ruler and cut 6 triangles. Quick and easy hexagon block!

This one is my personal favorite. I have actually designed 2 quilts around this block and I have to say I think the fabrics just really sing in this block. Can’t you hear them?

So these are them, the bee blocks I made for July. I might end up making 2 more when I get my fabric for Sew Bee Blissful, but it is coming from Germany and the post is sometimes slow coming from overseas.  I am still waiting on a few more blocks to come in from the 3×6 bee, but as soon as I have them all I will post pictures – they are really lovely!

Oh yeah, if you saw my post from yesterday, I managed to be even more terrible with the “fabric intake”. I bought 10 yards of batting – in my defense it was on sale!

If you haven’t already, make sure you check out the QAL that Jenna from SewHappyGeek and I are co-hosting, Sew Intertwined. It is going to be so much fun!

Completed Bee Blocks

I didn’t post the last day of June, I was busy finishing up bee blocks and dealing with some shocking family news. My Uncle was in a horrific motorcycle accident. He is going to be ok, but it will be a long and ugly road to recovery. Please send up a prayer of Thanksgiving because it could have been so much worse.

On a cheerier note…here are the last of my bee blocks for the 3×6 Bee.

I designed this block in Electric Quilt 7 and I truly love how they turned out. What I love the most about this type of bee is working with color combinations that I would not normally use, gives me a chance stretch my creativity. It also gives me a chance to see how versatile one of my designs really is.

I am going to take the next quarter off from the 3×6 Bee. I will still be sewing for Do.Good Stitches and my friend Shana asked me to sew for her this month, but other than that I will be sewing for my family and friends for the next several months. I miss working on projects that are near and dear to my heart and that is truly important to me.  You can expect to see at least 2 pairs of shorts this month for the Hopeful Threads July Project and I also have a little something special in the planning stages with Jenna from Sew Happy Geek, so stay tuned!

Do you all have anything special planned for the Fourth?

Don’t forget to go enter to win a fat quarter bundle of Battle Over Gotham from Fat Quarter Shop – giveaway open until July 3rd!

Log Cabins

Last night I finished my bee blocks for the Trust Circle of do.Good Stitches.  I enjoyed these blocks, we were asked to use blue, turquoise and aqua for the blocks with jewel tones in the centers.

Log Cabin

Log Cabin

I hope these work, I am excited to see the finished quilts from the Trust Circle.  The past couple of days have been a nightmare in Toddlerland. Anne has been throwing lots of temper tantrums, I am working on helping her deal with her emotions and trying to equip her with the words to tell me what is bothering her.  I will keep working with her on that.

Make sure you drop by tomorrow – you won’t be sorry!

More Mountains

I finished all of my bee blocks for one of the two hives I am in for the 3×6 bee.

Moutains & Valleys

I am really happy with how they turned out. I hope all of my bee mates like them. I still have 8 more blocks to make this month, here’s hoping I can get them all done!

Today I am going hopping with my bee mate Krista. I am really excited to meet her in person and the coolest part is that I get to deliver her block to her in person.  Krista, my friend Dawn, and a friend of Krista’s are all meeting up in Kent, WA for the Western Washington Quilt Shop Hop! I’m not going to be taking my big camera with me because Anne is joining us too and I don’t think that managing camera and toddler will be a good scene. I will have my camera phone though, so hopefully I will have a few pictures for you.

Wish us some shopping hop luck!
