Book Review

Book Review – 180 Doodle Quilting Designs

I am so excited to have the opportunity to review the new 180 Doodle Quilting Designs – Free-Motion Ideas for Blocks, Borders, and Beyond book that Martingale just published!  This book is so exciting because there are multiple designers who are all well known for free motion quilting and it shows some of their best designs and has directions for how to do those designs!

The book starts out reminding us of that love of doodling that we all possessed as children and gives great tips and hints on how to improve, or rather revive, your doodling techniques. It also shows how to go from designs in a book, to doodling them yourself to quilting with step by step instructions. Another thing I like is that the book has arrows on each design showing you exactly which direction to go next so that you never have to lift your pencil/needle when making these designs.

This is an example of how the designs are presented to you. Three ways showing you how to fill different spaces – triangles, squares and borders.  I love how versatile each design is!

On to my top three favorite designs!

My all time favorite swirl design is in this book! I call the “Vicki Swirls”, in the book they are called “Swirlmania”. Vicki Ruebel of Orchid Owl Quilts shares how to make the design that she is most well known for and let me tell you, they are fantastic. You can see examples of Vicki’s Swirlmania in this post on her blog!

Another favorite design is Spotlight by Sheila Sinclair Snyder of License to Quilt. What I love about this design is the angles and sharp points it creates. Sometimes I want something pointy and angular rather than soft and curvy and this design gives you just that!

I also fell in love with the Organic Checkerboard design by Maddie Kertay of the BadAss Quilters Society and Spool. This design creates amazing texture and can be done continuously without lots of starts and stops. I am not a fan of burying threads so any design that avoids that circumstance is awesome in my book!

This is one book I would highly recommend for anyone that does free motion quilting, whether on a domestic or a long arm, remember, I did FMQ on a domestic machine for YEARS before I bought my long arm this past March, I can tell you that this will help your skills on both types of machines.

You can purchase 180 Doodle Quilting Designs – Free-Motion Ideas for Blocks, Borders, and Beyond directly from Martingale or any of your other favorite book retailers.

Craft Book Month Blog Hop AND a Giveaway

Friendship Star Wall HangingWelcome to my day of the Craft Buds, Craft Book Month Blog Hop! I am so excited to be part of this hop!  I decided to choose a book that was gifted to me by the wonderful Julie from The Intrepid Thread, An Apple a Day by Amanda Herring and the Quilted Fish Design Team.

Now, the picture above is NOT my finished project…I have a good reason for this. This is my best friend’s birthday present and as she reads my blog every day I couldn’t show off the final product! She needs a few surprises people!!!

I will tell you, I absolutely love this book, there are many more patterns that will be made out of it, but for the blog hop I wanted to make something that I could make but also personalize. I chose Sally Keller’s “Apple Blessings Mini Art Quilt”. Below is her original:

As you can see, I changed a couple things, like the embroidery, my friend Debbe from Pieces to Love, helped me come up with embroidery saying on mine. I also eliminated the buttons and yo yos. The fabrics were easy to select, Lisa’s favorite color is purple and mine is blue. It is a great representation of our friendship.

Ties That Bind Book Review & Giveaway

Welcome to the final day of the Marie Bostwick Ties That Bind blog hop, hosted by Michele of Quilting Gallery.  When Michele asked me if I was interested in participating in this blog hop I immediately agreed – I am always looking for a good book to read, and as it turns out…this was a great book to read.

Here’s a quick synopsis of the book:

“Christmas is fast approaching, and New Bern, Connecticut, is about to receive the gift of a new pastor, hired sight unseen to fill in while Reverend Tucker is on sabbatical. Meanwhile, Margot Matthews’ friend, Abigail, is trying to match-make even though Margot has all but given up on romance. She loves her job at the Cobbled Court Quilt Shop and the life and friendships she’s made in New Bern; she just never thought she’d still be single on her fortieth birthday.

It’s a shock to the entire town when Phillip A. Clarkson turns out to be Philippa. Truth be told, not everyone is happy about having a female pastor. Yet despite a rocky start, Philippa begins to settle in—finding ways to ease the townspeople’s burdens, joining the quilting circle, and forging a fast friendship with Margot. When tragedy threatens to tear Margot’s family apart, that bond—and the help of her quilting sisterhood—will prove a saving grace. And as she untangles her feelings for another new arrival in town, Margot begins to realize that it is the surprising detours woven into life’s fabric that provide its richest hues and deepest meaning… ”

I didn’t read anything about the book before I opened it up, not even the synopsis. All I knew was that it was a novel with quilting as part of the main story line. I didn’t want to bias myself one way or another and I have to tell you I really did love it.

Here are a few fun questions that we were all asked to answer:

1. What drew you into the book? In the first few chapters of the book, one of the main characters, Margot, hand sews a binding on to the quilt and as Marie describes each individual stitch I could see Margot sitting and sewing. It was so vividly written, I was hooked.

2. Which character did you identify with? Give one reason as to why.  I identified with several characters, my favorite was Charlie – food is a main focus on his life (he owns a restaurant!) and the way his food is described I just wanted to eat it right off the pages!

3. If this is the first book of the series that you have read – will you be reading the rest now? This is the first book I have read in the series and I fully plan on finishing the series.

4. In 5 words or less state why someone NEEDS to read this novel.
It was a good laugh/cry!

5. Did you take a beginner quilting class when you first started out? What was it like and did it inspire you to continue quilting?
I’ve never taken a quilting class. I learned at my mom’s side, watching her for 20 years before taking the plunge and making my first quilt.

6. Phillipa signs up to make a baby quilt as her first quilt. Have you made a baby or toddler quilt? Share the photo and story if you like. (This is to be sent to me to post on the QG site)
My first quilt was for my niece – she turns 11 in September and I am making her a quilt to commemorate that occasion as well.  My first quilt was made out of all purple and pink calicos from JoAnns and back with some extra fabric we had from making dresses. My niece loved it to death…literally! She wore a hole straight through it.  The first quilt I ever designed by myself was for my daughter.
