Fiber of All Sorts

Color Value Class

This past weekend I was very blessed to be able to attend a Color Value Class by Katie from Sew Katie Did. I planned this class for the South Sound Modern Quilt Guild, with the help of my amazing board, that is in the South Puget Sound area of Washington State.   The class was made extra fun because Shanna from Fiber of All Sorts came too! She drove up from Oregon earlier in the week and spent the night on Saturday so we could visit and sew together. It was so much fun!

I learned so much during the class. Below are some of my biggest takeaways:

  • Most of my fabrics tend to be dark and medium values – I have a very limited selection of light value fabrics (except solids)
  • I struggle to work with prints only – turns out I really LOVE solids
  • My blindness can actually be an advantage in  determining color value
  • I need a new cell phone that can switch the photo to black and white – thank goodness Shanna let me use her phone during the class!
  • Everyone NEEDS to have a design wall of some kind!!! This is an absolute MUST HAVE!

With the fabrics that I brought to class (and two donated squares) here is what I have so far for my value quilt:

Value Diamond Quilt - https://test.sewbittersweetdesigns.comHere it is in Black and White – that makes it easier to see the color values:

Black & White Color Value Quilt - https://test.sewbittersweetdesigns.comI have been shopping my stash some more and I plan to add to my quilt. I would like for it to be at least 60″ x 60″ so I have a lot more half square triangles to make.

Have you ever made a Value Quilt? I can’t remember the last time I made a quilt and used all prints…it has been at least 7 years.

Week 7 Goals

Last week was kind of a whirl wind for me. Everyone in my house was sick, I ended up in the ER (I’m fine now), and the wonderful Shanna from Fiber of All Sorts came over Saturday night for a sewing date and we went to a quilting class together on Sunday. The class was super amazing, not only was it my first ever in person quilting class, but it was with my awesome local chapter of the Modern Quilt Guild – South Sound MQG, but it was taught by the fantastic Katie of Sew Katie Did. I will have more about the class tomorrow!

I did manage to accomplish my goals from last week, I will be posting pictures some time this week, but today is all about the goals for right now! My goal for week 7 is to piece the adorable I Spy blocks into 2 NICU quilts. The blocks were made by the fantastic ladies of the Trust Circle from Do. Good Stitches. I’m excited to piece these and get them quilted!

Finishes Party! January – A Lovely Year of Finishes

ALYoF2014Month one is done and gone! Can you believe that we are already one month down? I myself am blown away by how fast this year is going. I need for time to slow down, but since that isn’t going to happen, let’s just party it up with our first finish of the year!!!

Flying Stripper Quilt - https://test.sewbittersweetdesigns.comI got my top completed for my Flying Stripper Quilt. I made the row at the bottom and all of the geese sashing rows. I do believe that I will be using geese for sashing again because I absolutely love the over all effect. This quilt is destined to belong to Anne some day. It measures 84″ x 85″.  I still have to make a backing for it so for the time being it will sit for a bit, but I am reveling in the fact that the top is complete.

Your turn!!! Shanna and I want to see what you have finished up this month!

Remember, to be eligible for prizes you need to have linked up to our goal party at the beginning of the year. When you write your post to link to the finishes party, please link back to your original goal post. It makes life easier for Shanna and I. Thank you!!!

**Please note, the linky party is the same here and over at Shanna, so there is no need to enter twice **
