What do quilters do on vacation?

We quilt of course!

I spent yesterday afternoon pin basting a quilt top that my mom made and starting today I will be working on quilting it.

I had originally planned to just use cream thread all over it but then once I got it laid out and pinned, I fell in love with her colors and we went out and bought some green and red thread.  I haven’t 100% figured out my quilting plan yet. I’m torn between feathers and a large stipple…time will tell!

Oh, and I brought down my own machine to quilt on! No sense fussing trying to learn the ins and outs of mom’s machine when I already know all the kinks to my own machine.  It is a well traveled machine!

Oh! And I forgot to mention that quilters also buy fabric while on vacation…but don’t tell my husband that little secret!

Happy Thursday!

Christmas Quilt

I had really hoped this year that I would be finishing my Vintage Christmas Sampler which is now going on 1.5 years of being worked on, but alas, that did not happen. I do, however, have a different quilt to show you.

This is a quilt that I made for my mom 4.5 years ago for Mother’s Day. It is the first quilt I ever made for her, though I do have 2 tops currently in progress that will be hers. I followed the directions from the Log Cabin In A Day book by Eleanor Burns.

The only quilting that I did was stitch in the ditch around the borders, the rest of it was tied. I love the idea of an old fashioned tied quilt.

The reason I am showing you pictures of this quilt today is that we brought down all of our Christmas decorations this weekend and set up our tree, the quilt was in one of the boxes. Here’s a look at our tree.

Log Cabin Quilt Block Tutorial

The log cabin is one of the most basic quilt blocks. There are also several variations – Half Log Cabin, Star Log Cabin and Court House Steps.

Here is what your basic Log Cabin block looks like

Traditionally they are done with light and dark value fabrics, but truly anything goes. Check out this Flickr Group that is just for Log Cabins, you can also check out Sunni’s modern take on a Log Cabin block here.
