Mini Quilt

Quilt the Rainbow

Rainbow Mini - https://test.sewbittersweetdesigns.comI had so much fun making this little rainbow mini quilt. It measures 18″ x 18″ and was a great opportunity to use up some of my solid charms that I have collected through swaps over the years.  This is the last project I will quilt on my Janome before my new Innova long arm arrives. I am heading to pick it up this weekend and it will be built on the 23rd. In the meantime, I will be starting on a king size quilt today that will be my first quilt on the long arm. Good thing I got a 12 foot table!

Happy Friday!

A Mini Quilt For Me

I decided last September that I needed a new mini for my studio and who better to make that mini than me? After all, I know what I like, I know what I don’t like and I consider myself a fairly good quilter. So my mini was born. I took a Sew Kind of Wonderful pattern and slightly adapted the blocks to make them squares and a mini was born.

Then life happened, as it always does in this camo colored world that my family lives in.  The mini sat for 3.5 months before I was able to quilt it and then it sat for 3 more weeks before I was able to bind it, but it is all done now and hung up too!

I love the new mini, it adds a lovely splash of color to a wall that was naked and it is exactly what I wanted because I made it!

How often you make things just for you? Remember it is important to take care of yourself too!

Improv Weekend Sewing

This weekend I did some improv sewing.  Improv is hard for me, I like the control that a plan gives you. In some ways, improv sewing pushes me outside my comfort zone in the best possible way. I tried some things I never would have done if I had a plan. The key for me is telling myself over and over again that it is just fabric!

Blue Improv - https://test.sewbittersweetdesigns.comI wanted to work on improv geese – which is my favorite improv technique and also improv curves, which I find intriguing and I love the movement they add. Do you see the wave on the bottom right and the big curve with an inset fussy cut on the upper right? Believe me, those are easier to do than you may think!  I also wanted to do a couple of special fussy cuts, like the little fish that says “swimming” and the river ferry.

My friend Kim, over at Persimon Dreams, is taking over the Scrap Quilt Challenge for 2016 and I am one of the bloggers who will be giving some tutorials and inspiration on how to use those lovely scraps I just know you have hanging out in your stash!

On February 15th I will have a tutorial on scrappy improv geese and how to do that gentle wave at the bottom right. I am excited to share how I do it. I’m certain that my way isn’t the only way, but if you are new to these techniques, I will give you a good idea of how to do it! You can see the rest of the bloggers here.

In the meantime this beautiful blue mini will be quilted with some matchstick quilting for a friend of mine and I just hope she loves it as much as I do!

Happy Sewing!

Some mini quilts for your viewing pleasure

Last week at my Modern Quilt Guild meeting I was doing a demo of the Quick Curve Ruler by Jenny Pedigo of Sew Kind of Wonderful.  In order to do said demo I had to cut out two different blocks, which naturally meant that two new WIPs (works in progress) were born.  I have turned those demo blocks into mini quilts (tops anyways). One will be for my partner for the Schnitzel and Boo mini quilt swap that is currently happening on Instagram and the second one will be for yours truly.

Quick Curve Minis - https://test.sewbittersweetdesigns.comMy partner for Schnitzel and Boo likes batiks and modern patterns so I figured what’s better than combining them both. I made a 16 inch block from the Metro Scope pattern, available on Jenny’s site. The other block was originally two out of three rows from the Crazy Eight’s pillow pattern from the Curved Contemporary Quilts book. You may remember that last August I participated in a blog hop for the release of this book and made the Crazy Eight’s pillow.

I stayed with the same color inspiration, but realized that I wanted something a little different, so I ripped the mini apart and made each section square and made what I was truly envisioning when I was cutting fabric, now I am in LOVE!

Quick Curve Minis - https://test.sewbittersweetdesigns.comThis version makes me happy! I just need to quilt them both, but for now they will rest on my design wall while I work on my Lovely Year of Finishes goal.

Happy Tuesday and Happy Sewing!

Raising the Sun – A new mini quilt

Happy last day of March everyone! Did you survive? I barely did! Did you finish your goal for March? You have a few more hours to link up. You can do it! Burn the midnight oil, after all, we’ve got awesome prizes!

One of the things I worked on in the month of March was two mini quilts for a birthday club that I am part of. Both are original designs. One is destined to be a pattern and will appear at a later date. The other could become a pattern if enough people express an interest.

Raising The Sun:

Here is the back. I used the backing as the binding this time, so I had to do my label a little differently than my usual binding label.

Here’s a close up of that label:

Raising the Sun Label - https://test.sewbittersweetdesigns.comI had a lot of fun designing this mini, though I have to admit that it is outside my color comfort zone.

What have you been up to? Come back tomorrow for the April goal party!
