Sew Happy Quilt Progress

Ok, so I know I just blogged about Sew Happy Quilt last week but I just finished my last block yesterday!!!  I am sew excited! There were several things I had never done before and I wanted to tackle when I signed up for SewHappyGeek’s QAL and I am happy to say, with this last block, I have conquered them all.

Making a Dresden Plate has been something I have been wanting to do for a long time and Jenna’s tutorial made it so simple!

Jenna is having a little giveaway for those of us participating in the QAL, we have to have our quilt tops finished by March 18th – that’s next Friday. I need to get my rear in gear! This afternoon, while Anne napped, I got the Dresden Plate made and I started playing on Ole Frog Eyes until I got the layout I wanted. What do you think?

The outer border will be a medium gray – I am loving Northcott solids and I have a beautiful one that matches the lighter shade of gray in the Rendezvous fabric. I am going to sash it in white and use red for the cornerstones.  Tomorrow Anne and I will head to our LQS to get a yard of white and a fat quarter of the red. Hopefully I can get this together in time!

Are you quilting along with Jenna? I have had so much fun with this QAL and so glad that I stuck with it the whole time!

And don’t forget to enter to win a subscription of Ole Frog Eyes – I’m telling you – it is totally worth the $2.50 a month!

Quilting Along

Last December when Jenna at SewHappyGeek debuted her SewHappyQuilt QAL – I just knew I had to participate.  I already had the perfect fabric in mind. Well, aside from this week, I have managed to keep up 100% with the QAL. I haven’t done this week’s block yet, I decided to baste my Sister-In-Law’s baby quilt today. I am hoping to get the 11th block done tomorrow or Monday.

Here are my blocks so far. I am using Rendezvous by Khristian Howell. I am sew in love with this line! I am thinking I should have enough and will also be using the line for the backing.

What do you think? Isn’t this going to be a fabulous cuddle quilt? I already know where it is going to live in my house – in my sitting area in my bedroom – which we are still working on.

Sew.Happy.Quilt Block 6 – Fireflies Tutorial

This was originally posted over on Jenna’s blog SewHappyGeek as part of the Sew.Happy.Quilt QAL. I had so much fun making this block and I am loving this quilt! Let me know if you have any questions!

So here we go!

Let’s start with the cutting instructions:

Usually when I make HSTs I cut my squares larger, but for this block, I find my results are more accurate if I cut to these measurements and starch like crazy.

All seams: 1/4 inch

Start by Assembling your 6 blue & white HSTs – I like to chain piece. Sew section after section without cutting your threads until you are done. Then cut them all apart – for newer quilters – this will save you lots of time.

Next – take 2 of your HSTs and assemble your large triangle sections (make 2):

Next – take your large red triangles and assemble two 6.5″ blocks:

(Hint) – place the pieces right sides together – line up the points and sew – then trim down to 6.5″

Next assemble two 4-patch blocks:

Layout your block and sew together – voila – you’re done!

Weekend Sewing Update

I know, I know, it is Wednesday and I’m giving you a weekend sewing update in the middle of the week. Well, what can I say, there was some pretty important stuff I had to say earlier in the week 🙂

If you haven’t already, make sure you check out Monday’s post on the Valentine’s Day Showcase

Grab the button from my sidebar and show everyone you plan to participate – so far there are 2 great prizes lined up from my wonderful sponsors!

In sewing news, I was a busy little bee this past weekend. I worked on the first two blocks from Jenna’s Sew. Happy. Quilt QAL. The Snowball and Woven blocks. I have to tell you, I love how quickly these blocks came together – I was done with both in an hour!

I’m using Rendezvous for Anthropology that I bought from Julie at Intrepid Thread. It was painful to cut into these fabrics, but I couldn’t be happier with the results!

Next up, I worked on blocks for Quilting for Kids – this is a Flickr Group run by So Sarah Sews. The group is making two quilts right now for foster children. It made my day that I could participate and help make something that will bring comfort to a child in need.

Sarah gave us a great tutorial to follow and I learned yet another great way to make Half Square Triangles.

I also worked on my bee blocks for Sew.Bee.Blissful – the month we were give some gorgeous yellow and gray prints and some solid white fabric to create Garden Fence blocks. She linked us up with this tutorial from Hyacinth Quilt Designs.

Don’t you just love her fabric choices?!? Entering 2012 has lit a fire under me, I have to figure out what I want to do for my month…egads!  My month is May so I need to have everything decided and mailed by the end of April – decisions decisions…

What have you been working on?
