Sew BitterSweet Designs Patterns

Spiked Pinwheels

Hello! I am still alive, I promise. I’ve been working on my Master’s degree the last 8 months and have not had much time for quilting. That being said, I still do have patterns coming out! My latest one, called Spiked Pinwheels, is in Issue 21 of Modern Quilts Unlimited!

This quilt is a monochromatic design made in American Made Brand solids, which are so awesome to work with! It’s a new take on the classic pinwheel design using half rectangle triangles. I quilted this beauty on Spike with double batting, so it is thick and luxurious.

So the next time you are at the bookstore make sure you pick up Issue 21, some of my favorite designers are in this issue, including Vicki of Orchid Owl Quilts.

Keep on quilting and I will keep on studying!

Cover Girl – Hypnotic Eye

I’m sorry for the prolonged absence. With a deployed spouse and going back to school, finding the time for blogging has been hard.  I wanted to share that my quilt, Hypnotic Eye will be on the cover of Issue 20 of Modern Quilts Unlimited!

I hope everyone is having an amazing summer! I am splitting my time between my family, long arm quilting and working on the last few Master’s classes I have before I student teach in January!

This was my secret project that I was working on back in January. It is hard to see in the picture but I did some of my favorite zentangle quilting on it, in fact this is one of the last quilts done on my domestic before Spike arrived.

I am so excited to be included in an issue with so many other gorgeous designs! Make sure to head over to the Make Modern website and download your copy today!

Have a very happy Friday!

Pattern Release!

I am so excited to release a new pattern today! Well it isn’t really new, it actually appeared in Issue 7 of Make Modern Magazine back in September of 2015.  Allow me to introduce you to Through The Prism.

Through The Prism - https://test.sewbittersweetdesigns.comThis pattern was originally designed for a friend in my birthday club but I fell in love with the design and decided I needed one for myself, then I ended up making a third for another swap! The pattern is fast and easy requiring small scraps for each rainbow section.

I provide a link to a basic paper piecing tutorial as well as instructions for my favorite paper piecing method that doesn’t involve sewing through the templates.

signaturePS. If you haven’t already subscribed to Make Modern Magazine, go do it now! I have a pattern coming out in the May 2016 Issue!

Generation Q Magazine

Do you subscribe to Generation Q Magazine? I love their magazine, and I have since it came out. It is slightly smaller than your standard size magazine, but it is jam packed with great patterns and articles. They also have a fun regular feature where they draw part of a quilt block, just a few simple lines, and ask readers to send in submissions of how they would finish the block. They usually show two or three entries in the next issue. It is so fun to see how something can inspire two people to head in completely opposite and beautiful directions.

You may be asking yourself, why is Melissa blogging about Generation Q Magazine today? Well, today the 2016 Spring issue is hitting newsstands and I’m one of the designers featured with a never before seen pattern! So head to your local retailer (for me that would be Barnes and Noble) and pick up your copy, this is what you are looking for:

Do you want to see which pattern in the magazine is mine?

Fade In Fade Out - https://test.sewbittersweetdesigns.comThis quilt is called Fade In Fade Out and was originally designed for a black and white challenge. I loved this design and decided that instead of submitting it to the exhibit, I would submit it to Generation Q Magazine instead, I was so excited when they accepted me. For the exhibit I ended up designing and submitting a different quilt – Hypnotic Eye and that one was ultimately accepted into the exhibit so it was like winning twice!

The quilt was given a beautiful photograph for the magazine, I am so grateful to their professional photographer, she did a beautiful job!

Tomorrow my long arm will be set up (I picked up the machine on Saturday) and I will be posting photos on Thursday for you!
