Sew Intertwined QAL

Modern Mini Challenge – My Actual Entry!

Yesterday I posted about a mini that I would have loved to enter in the Modern Mini Quilt Challenge over at Ellison Lane, since it was older than 6 months I couldn’t enter it but I still wanted to share it.  The doesn’t mean I don’t have any modern mini’s to enter though, I finished my all time favorite pillow back in February that I can and I am entering!

I love this pillow! I made it to complement my Sew Intertwined Quilt and also to encourage me to finish the quilt. I finished the pillow in February of this year and finished the quilt in March – see, it worked!

My favorite part of this pillow is the quilting, here’s a close up:

I’m a huge fan of straight line quilting and I also love that the dresden is echoed in the quilting. I used the exact same technique on the quilt itself when I quilted it a month later.

Bloggers Quilt Festival – Sew Intertwined

So this year you are allowed to enter TWO quilts into the Blogger’s Quilt Festival hosted by Amy at Amy’s Creative Side, so I decided what the heck, I will enter a second. Make sure you check out my first entry here!

AmysCreativeSide.com

I wasn’t quite sure which quilt to enter, but at the end of the day I settled on my Sew Intertwined Quilt. You can read more about how to make you own here. I co-hosted a QAL for this quilt last year with Jenna from Sew Happy Geek. This is one of my all time favorite quilts that I have made.

I love this quilt because it is a somewhat traditional design – hello Dresden – but it also screams modern with the fabrics that I used.

I am entering this into the Home Machine Quilted Quilts category. I realize that it doesn’t have any fancy free motion quilting done on it but if you look at the the quilting on the back, you will see that I was able to mimic the entire design from the front onto the back.

I did straight line quilting in each section using the same color thread on the top and on the bottom. Hoping that thread color would pop on the back. As is my usual habit with backings, I used a high thread count muslin on the back. I actually plan to enter this quilt into my local county fair this summer, it will be my first contest and I’m rather excited about that!

Here is a close up of the back of the Dresden, you can see the pebbling I did in the center of the Dresden.

The plan for this quilt, eventually, is to give it to my niece. I’m thinking when she reaches a milestone birthday or when she graduates from high school. She is the first person I ever made a quilt for and I think she will really love this one too.

March Finish – A Lovely Year of Finishes

This month I paid the price for my zeal and need to finish my goal. Truly I paid the price for all the handwork. All that aside, I am bursting with pride to show you my finish for March!

I know it is bright and obnoxious, but I just don’t care, I’m IN LOVE!

Here is a close up of how I quilted the Dresden (you can see even more detail on the back pictures below).

This was quilted on my home machine and I think this is truly the largest size I could handle in my machine for this particular type of quilt – 60×60 (before washing). With the shadow (or echo) quilting the quilt needs to be constantly worked through the throat of the machine and turned at every angle. The overall effect though is pretty cool if you ask me. Check out the back:

I used the same color threads on the front and on the back. My goal was to mimic the quilt design from the front on the back. A very simple but effective design element. I used 90″ wide, high thread count muslin for the backing. It is soft and yet not so dense that it is hard to quilt like using sheets can sometimes be.

Here is a picture of the dresden from the back. (Sorry for the crap lighting I had a little trouble with lighting on the back photographs. I’m not used to shooting an all white cloth surface.)

I don’t know why but I loved the way the corners looked on the back, so here is one last close up for you:

Quilt Details:

Quilted: By Melissa Dunworth, on a Janome Horizon 7700

Quilting Progress and an injury

I would like to start this post with a heartfelt thank you to the amazing response I got to my post on Friday. I was truly touched by the outpouring of support that you have shown me. Thank you so much. (I apologize for not responding to comments, my hands are screaming bloody murder just from typing this post.)

On a similar note, I definitely pushed it too hard last week trying to get the Sew Intertwined quilting done and binding sewn on before we leave for vacation. I have unwittingly caused an RA flare up in my hands. The pain has been so severe that it has been waking me up at night. This means no sewing for me the last 2 days. At this point I have no idea if it will ease up enough to get my binding on before we leave for vacation – the plan was to bury threads and hand sew the binding in the car as we are planning to drive to California and also have multiple side trips planned – lots of car time. Luckily I have some amazing friends and one offered to do my bee blocks for me for do. Good Stitches for March. Without her help I know I would have fallen down on that commitment because there is no way I could get 3 done by Friday.

In other news, I did push myself and here is my progress. My question to you…is am I done quilting? Before you answer, you should know that I am planning on entering this quilt into our county fair this summer. So I don’t want a judge saying to him/herself, “Why did she stop?”

**** Sorry for the crappy pictures, it is 5 pm and I’m still in my jammies and it is also raining, so no going outside.**** (don’t judge the jammies 🙂 it is the weekend and I’ve been sick)

Here is the view of the whole quilt from the front

View from the back. I did a solid muslin backing using 90″ wide fabric so I wouldn’t have any seams. I also did matching thread on the front and the back so you could see the design of the top on the back.

Now my question is about the outside round of blocks. I only quilted the HSTs (the white portions and the prints) and the pink parts of each block, there will be close up pictures below. Do you think I need to quilt the gray and orange sections as well?

Close up of back

I would like to be done for a couple reasons:

  1. I don’t want the quilt to look over worked
  2. My hands are killing me and I’m not sure how much more they can take
  3. I’m running out of time, we leave in 4 days

So…am I done?
