Week 5 Goals

Wow! We are already in week 5. Time is really flying this year.

I have to say that I am really glad I am setting these simple weekly goals for myself, it is really helping me check things off the list. If you remember from last week my goal was to simply get my Riley Blake Challenge quilt backing made and get the quilt basted. Well I can happily say I blew that goal out of the water! I got it basted, quilted and trimmed!

Here is a view of the front.

Rainbow Star - https://test.sewbittersweetdesigns.comI have to say that I love the back almost as much as the front, and someone was kind enough to point out that I could use this as an entry to the Radiant Orchid quilt contest that is going on too!

Back - Riley Blake Challenge - https://test.sewbittersweetdesigns.comI am really happy to report that I used all of the provided Riley Blake fabrics between the front and the back and the only non-Riley Blake fabrics are the 2 solids I used. Also, I only purchased the Red Chevron and the binding fabric I plan to use to complete this quilt, which means for the most part this is entirely a stash quilt! WOOHOO!

I auditioned my binding choice yesterday. Someone from my guild bound one of her quilts in a chevron and I absolutely loved the over all effect and I’ve decided to take a page out of her book. What do you think?

Binding - Rainbow Star - https://test.sewbittersweetdesigns.comMy goals for this week are simple. I would like to get the binding strips made and sewn down to the front of the quilt. I plan to hand bind this one so I know I can’t finish that in one week. I also need to do my Do. Good Stitches blocks and have them mailed out by Friday. Here’s hoping I can get those done today! We are following this tutorial for a Butterfly Block.

I hope everyone has a wonderfully productive week! Don’t forget if you are finishing up your January Goals for A Lovely Year of Finishes to hop on over and link them up here!

Week 4 Goals

Welcome to week 4 of the year! I normally want to get these posts up on Mondays, but my husband had the day off work on Monday and I spent the day with him and Anne instead of blogging. Family comes first, right?

I am happy to report that I finished last week’s goal, but I won’t be showing it to you until the finishes party for A Lovely Year of Finishes. How is your goal coming along?

This week I want to work on my Riley Blake Challenge quilt for The Modern Quilt Guild. You can read about the Challenge here.  I’m really excited because my top is done and I love how it turned out. I added white for a solid and some more basics that I happened to have in my stash and the red chevron that I bought to go with the challenge.  The challenge is to use the fabrics that Riley Blake provided. You can add in any brand solids and any other Riley Blake prints that you like.  Here is what I have so far:

Riley Blake Challenge Rainbow Lonestar Quilt Top - https://test.sewbittersweetdesigns.comI am seriously in love. I am not quite sure what I will do with this quilt when it is finished but whatever happens with it I am sure it will be loved.

My goal for this week is to get the back made and get the quilt basted. I have no idea what I am going to do for the backing yet, but I would like to incorporate the 2 challenge fabrics that I did not use on the front. There is no requirement to use all 6 fabrics that were provided, but it would be nice to do so.

What are you working on this week?

Swap Fun With My Guild

Last night was our monthly meeting for the South Sound Modern Quilt Guild and it was a fun one! In September everyone who wanted to brought in baggies full of their scraps and traded with someone else. The goal was to make a swap gift for someone using that persons scraps (kind of guaranteed they will, at the very least, love the fabrics).  There was no limit on what you could make.

When I got my bag all I could see was white fabric. I was initially a bit scared, what was I going to do with just WHITE! My partner though was stealthy, she hid all of her colors inside a nice wide strip of white, lovely oranges and grays. Here is what I made:

I have a ton of orange and gray scraps too, so I added some from my stash. My partner made it so easy on me, she said she didn’t have a zippered pouch and her pin cushion was in need of updating. Voila!

I made the pouch using a QAYG technique, with no pattern or tutorial, just made it up as I went. The pin cushion I just sewed together all of the scraps. I had so much fun making this. If you want a tutorial for the pouch let me know, I will happily whip another one up, it won’t be exactly the same, but you will get the general idea of how to make it.

The awesome part though was when we got to give our gifts, the ladies in this group are just so crazy talented! It was amazing to see what they made with scraps! Heather from Creative Blessings had me and she clearly did her homework! She got me down to a tee.

I felt so incredibly spoiled! She got me my favorite fabric line (Simply Style) and a gorgeous mug rug and cup cozy with a little coffee set! She even gave me some extra flying geese and hexie templates!

This card (which I didn’t read until this morning) truly touched my heart. Heather is incredibly talented with making cards and it made me feel so special to receive one of hers!

And this notebook cover! She designed it herself and could she have gotten my style any better?!? Hexies and flying geese! My two favorite things!

I think Heather needs to do a tutorial for this! It is truly an awesome design. It even has a pouch for sticky notes and a pencil! LOVE LOVE LOVE!

As Heather said in her card, this guild has filled a need in her life that she didn’t know she had, and she is so right for me too. I had no idea who much starting this guild would mean to me, but it truly has been the most amazing experience! Thank you so much Heather!

Dutchman’s Puzzle

I am participating in my guild’s Block of the Month, you can too if you like, just check out South Sound MQG.  Our Vice President, Bethany from Sew I’m Pressed, did the tutorial for October, a Dutchman’s Puzzle.  She also set us a little challenge, for our charity blocks we were to make the block using a Cool Color and in 2 different values.  This was a challenge for me (I have always felt that color is my biggest weakness), I had to keep re-reading the excellent tutorials that Bethany provided in the tutorial.

Here is my charity block:

I took the picture above and switched it to black and white view in Picasa to see how I did on the whole color value thing. I’m pretty sure I got it right, but I guess I will find out at the next meeting, November 6th.

Are you participating in any Block of the Month programs? You are welcome to join in with my guild, the tutorials are all free and over on our guild blog.
