February A Lovely Year of Finishes – Mid Month Check In

Well it’s that time! The middle of the month, time to check in and show of your progress so far. This is a short month so it is going to be a short party, only 5 days – it is going run from the 15th of February until the 20th.

Here’s my progress to date. All my blocks for my row are done. I have to decide their layout and whether to sew them to Shanna’s row (how they are pictured now) or at the bottom under Shelley’s row.

Here are close ups of the last 2 blocks I made. The first I made loosely following a tutorial from Pile of Fabric on Improv Curves. It is a great tutorial and I just modified it for putting it at a diagonal in a quilt block.

The second block I designed and will hopefully be doing a tutorial for next week. I am calling it “Ovulating Spiral” in honor of the quilt it was designed for.

Time to show of your progress and don’t forget there are prizes on the line for those of you who finish their stated goal from the beginning of the month, you can read about them here.

Don’t forget you can link up here or over at Fiber of All Sorts, no need to link up twice. If you are having issues shoot me an email or a comment and I will happily help you out!

Stripper Row Progress

Well, my hubby went back to work last Wednesday, hard to believe that they only get 2 days off when they get home from Afghanistan, but there are so many reasons for this, before anyone asks, I will tell you that we do get a month of leave but not until the middle of March. In the meantime it is back to work and our regular daily routine. For Anne and I, that means kindergym, library, chores and nap times. Nap times for mommy basically translates to sewing time. My sewing time is definitely cut in half since having my hubby home because I won’t be sewing at night anymore, but you know what…I’m OK with that!!!

Here are some pictures of what I have been working on.  I am really excited about how this stripper row is turning out.

Don’t you just love my awesome design wall! I really do need to hang some flannel or batting or something so I can ditch the tape and hangers!

The first 2 blocks I were made with the Quick Curve Ruler by Sew Kind of Wonderful. She is doing a QAL right now with her sister and they did a curved flying geese tutorial. I followed the directions but didn’t want geese, so I took the individual 4.5″ squares and changed the lay out.

I’m calling this block “Wedges” because that is what it looks like to me.

I’m calling this block “Circles and Diamonds”. I love how this turned out.

My favorite block so far though is the one I made last night:

This is the Swirly Twirly Dresden and was designed by Vicki from Quilting Lodge. It is a paper pieced pattern and is machine appliqued to a 12.5″ black background.

I have to say, I was super intimidated when I first saw the blocks that Vicki made, but once I conquered my fear of curvy paper piecing I was pleasantly surprised. It took me longer to pick fabrics and decide on their order than it did to piece this together! The hardest part was deciding how to applique it on to my background fabric. I ended up sewing it to a black square that was barely larger than the circle, trimming the excess, then turning it through the open hole. Then I fused the black center circle on to it and zig zag stitched it in place. I pinned the entire piece to the 12.5″ square and stitched around the outside with a 1/8″ seam.

I am tickled with the results and only have 2 blocks left to make!

Don’t forget today is the last day to enter the giveaway from Contemporary Cloth welcoming home my hubby! Good luck to everyone who entered and I will announce the winner tomorrow for Valentine’s Day!

What are you all working on?

Sew Intertwined Pillow

Ok, so I know that I finished my Sew Intertwined quilt top forever ago, like this summer and I still haven’t gotten around to quilting it, but I did finish the pillow to go with the quilt last week!  And if I’m being perfectly honest, and really, why shouldn’t I be, I do actually still plan to add a solid gray border around the outside, so I guess the top isn’t 100% finished.

I’m hoping that my new pillow will inspire me to finish this quilt – do I see my goal for March A Lovely Year of Finishes…just maybe!

I decided to quilt this pillow exactly as I plan to quilt the Dresden in the center of the quilt, with radiating 1/4″ lines in the colors of the quilt: white, green, pink, and orange. I love the overall effect.

Here’s a bit more of a close up on the quilting.

For the back I decided to do a 3 button closure, a first for me. I am really happy with the results (I didn’t follow a tutorial, just did what looked and felt right). The reason the buttons look like they are pulling so much is the pillow form is just a touch too big. I need to order a custom sized one, the ones at JoAnns were all either a touch big or a touch small. I suppose I could make my own…but then that would require even more work and it might never get done! LOL!

This week my goal is to finish the 3 more blocks for my stripper row, I finished 2 last week. I also have 3 bee blocks I need to make. I’m hoping I can get it all done. I’ve been a touch distracted from my sewing with my hubby back home 🙂

Oh yes, and there is a fantastic giveaway that I want to share with you, it’s Monday after all and giveaways are a great way to start the week! My friend Shirley from SimpleSew is celebrating her Blogaversary this week and is having a little party. Make sure you head on over and check it out!!! And don’t forget that my welcome home giveaway from Contemporary Cloth is open until February 13th, still lots of time to enter and join in our homecoming celebration!

A Lovely Year of Finishes – February Goal Setting Party

I can’t believe it is already February 1st, how did that happen? The year is already 8.3% over and it just started!  In January alone this amazing group of stitchers had over 120 finishes! Can you believe that?!?  I was just so proud to have finished my first quilt of the year and I can’t wait to move on to my next project for 2013.  This one is not an entire quilt and I won’t even find out what the finished top will look like until almost the end of the year.  I will be working on the next row for my Strip Quilting Group.

My partner in crime, Shanna, made the top row and the queen for this particular quilt is Brookquilt (Shelley) and her theme is “Do Strippers Make More When They Ovulate?” Shelley made the bottom row. Now I already know that Shelley loves Kaffe Fassett fabrics so I will be pulling from my stash. The requirements for this particular quilt are that we use Kona Black (provided) and bright saucy colors. Here are the fabrics I will be pulling from:

I’m not sure why but the colors are a bit off in the picture, sorry about that.  My drop deadline date is February 28th, so wish me luck that I can have this done. I will also be working on several other bee blocks for Bee Awesome (the last month) and Do.Good Stitches Trust Circle. If I’m feeling really scrappy I would like to get borders on my Sew Intertwined quilt and get it basted…but we’ll see about that.

So what do you have planned for February?!?

Add your blog post or flickr photo (with appropriate descriptions) to the linky party below.

**Please note, the linky party is the same here and over at Shanna’s, so there is no need to enter twice **

Make sure you check out the details of 2013 ~ A Lovely Year of Finishes found here or here, we’ve also added a Q&A Page for you.

Oh and Prizes!!! What would a party be without prizes? The prizes for February are as follows:

1. $20.00 Gift Certificate from the Quilting Lodge

2. $15.00 Gift Certificate from Contemporary Cloth

I Stripped!

I am so excited! I finished my first stripper row from my Strip Quilters Group!

Shanna from Fiber of All Sorts gave me such amazing inspiration (her row is the top row) and below her row is what I came up with, I hope it compliments it well.

Rows 1 & 2 of the Triangles for Strippers quiltI had so much fun working on this row for Shanna. There is a tutorial on my blog for the two side blocks – check it out here. Next week I will have a tutorial up for the center block and I will eventually have one for the curvy pinwheel block too.

Happy Hump Day!
