I’m sorry for the prolonged absence. With a deployed spouse and going back to school, finding the time for blogging has been hard. I wanted to share that my quilt, Hypnotic Eye will be on the cover of Issue 20 of Modern Quilts Unlimited!
I hope everyone is having an amazing summer! I am splitting my time between my family, long arm quilting and working on the last few Master’s classes I have before I student teach in January!
It’s that time of the year when people start setting resolutions and picking a word for the year. I am not setting any resolutions – I have a constant goal to take better care of myself and my people, but I don’t consider that a resolution because I don’t think I’ve ever really done a bad job of that in the past.
I do like to pick a word for the year though. This year I have chosen to focus on Compassion. Compassion for myself – stop blaming myself and start forgiving myself. Compassion for other – if we all had a little bit more compassion for our fellow man maybe things wouldn’t feel as scary as the do these days.
Instead of jumping to conclusions or assuming the worst, I am going to focus on being compassionate to those around me.
What is your word for the year?
I’m still quilting away out here in Washington and would love to quilt for you too! I am trying to go back to school to finish my teaching credential so feel free to help me pay for it by hiring me!

Sorry I have been so absent lately, family life needs to always come first and Anne is my number one concern. Have you ever felt like you’ve been given an extremely special gift? That’s how I felt last month when Shanna from Fiber of All Sorts asked me to quilt her very first quilt top that she made! I felt so incredibly honored and at the same time scared! It had to be perfect because this it this quilt that made her a quilter!
I decided it needed curvy orange peels, and LOTS of them!
Doesn’t the texture just look completely fantastic? For some reason my camera is struggling to take good pictures from far away, I will have my tech guy (also known as my dad) look at it at Christmas, but in the meantime here is a somewhat blurry picture that does not do this quilt any justice at all!
The texture on the back looks pretty darn amazing too!

Remember I do custom quilting work, I am now offering a very limited selection of extra wide backings and my rates start as low as 1.5 cents per square inch for all over edge-to-edge designs. I had the joy of honor of quilting a guild mates quilt last month. Jennie made a gorgeous sampler quilt and wanted it to be bigger so she add nice big sashing and borders to make it large enough for a twin size bed, or really the perfect size to cuddle under. The quilt was a mix between quilting cotton fabrics and flannel and the backing was a solid green flannel. Jennie’s only request was that the quilting not be too dense because she didn’t want the quilt to be extra heavy – remember that flannel is heavier than quilting cottons.
Jennie opted to pay for my additional service of quilt trimming. This saves you time and it saves your knees too! It is a small fee of $15.00 for small quilts and $25.00 for larger quilts.
I was most pleased with the scroll work that I did in the sashing – I think it really adds something special to the quilt.
With the paisley fabrics I thought the scroll work blended perfectly with the prints.

Last month I had the privilege of quilting a gorgeous Patio Quilt – pattern can be found here on Happy Zombie’s blog – for my guild mate and friend, Tina. She made a gorgeous boy version of the quilt and we both agreed that it was screaming for some wood grain quilting.
I fell in love with this quilt as I was working on. It really is the perfect quilt for a little boy. One of the additional services that I offer to my customers, at their request, is to trim the quilting and send the extra fabric and batting back to them. Most of us hate getting down and trimming the quilt so I am happy to offer this additional service to my customers for a small fee.
The texture created by the wood grain quilting pattern is absolutely fantastic!
I love how this turned out, I used a cream on top and on the back and it stands out in some spots and recedes beautifully into the quilt in other spots, when working with a quilt that has multiple colors the key is to pick a thread that will go great with the vast majority of it and not pop out too much. The other option is to use a clear invisible thread like Monopoly by Superior threads, then you don’t see the thread at all but the texture that is created by the stitching.
